ISing Choir, under the direction of Stephen Galván, presents Christmas with a Japanese Twist inspired by the choir’s successful concert tour to Japan this past summer. These concerts feature a superb collection of Christmas carols arranged by the conductor of New York City’s Choir of Trinity Wall Street, Julian Wachner. With grand gestures standing alongside the gentle and mysterious, Mr. Wachner’s unique and festive settings will come to life in a whole new way accompanied by traditional Japanese instruments.
ISing will perform a number of Christmas favorites like “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” as well as the lovely “Niño lindo” from Venezuela and the traditional English carol “The Snow Lay On the Ground”. Also on the program will be a Japanese tone poem, the sublime “In Winter’s Keeping” by Jackson Hill, and the premiere of David Walters’ “And on the Mountain, I saw Eternity.” Internationally renowned organist, Dr. Jeannine Jordan, members of Big Horn Brass, koto instrumentalists from Oregon Koto-kai, and taiko drummers from Takohachi will join the choir to provide a rich and memorable musical experience.
ISing’s mission is to share innovative and exceptional choral music while supporting local non-profit organizations. ISing performs the finest that choral music has to offer and increases public awareness of non- profits that are making a positive impact in our community.
These concerts will benefit Tavern Books. Tavern Books is a not-for-profit poetry publisher based in Portland, Oregon. They exist to print, promote, and preserve works of literary vision, to foster a climate of cultural preservation, and to disseminate books in a way that benefits the reading public. Tavern Books administers two programs that strive to bring poetry to its widest possible audience: The Living Library (their publishing program), and The Wrolstad Contemporary Poetry Series (their submission-based series open to young women).
This concert series is made possible through grants from the Cultural Coalition of Washington County and the Beaverton Intercultural Council.
